What about lead paint in an older Toronto house?

Paint containing lead was used in Canadian homes for decades and can still be present under later coats in older stock. It is not a hazard while it is intact and sealed. It becomes one when it is sanded or scraped, which is why on older painted surfaces we use methods that limit dust, and why aggressive dry sanding of unknown old coatings is not something we do.
