Siding painting in Toronto for aluminum, stucco and wood cladding

Paint Toronto repaints the cladding on houses across the inner suburbs and the 905. Siding is where the wrong preparation shows fastest, because a topcoat bonded to a chalked or unwashed surface is bonded to nothing and will sheet off within a couple of seasons.

Three cladding types, three approaches

Aluminum

Chalks as the binder breaks down. Wash the powder off, prime to bond, then topcoat. The wash is the whole job.

Stucco and parging

Moves with temperature and needs an elastomeric or masonry-rated coating that bridges hairline cracks instead of splitting over them.

Vinyl

Can be painted, but only within its original heat absorption range. A darker colour than the panel was made for will warp it.

Our Process

How a siding repaint runs

1

Identify the cladding

Material, age and previous coating confirmed on each elevation, with a chalk test run on aluminum.

2

Wash and dry out

Full wash to remove chalk, dirt and biological growth, then time to dry before any primer is opened.

3

Repair, caulk, prime

Loose panels refixed, joints and penetrations caulked, and a bonding primer matched to the substrate applied.

4

Topcoat by elevation

Two coats of a cladding-rated exterior product, applied inside the forecast window and inspected elevation by elevation.

What a siding scope covers

Cladding is where preparation shows fastest, and where shortcuts show within two seasons.

Chalk test at the walkthrough

A dark cloth down a south panel tells us how much wash stage the quote actually needs.

Primer matched per material

Aluminum, stucco, wood and vinyl each named with their own primer in the scope.

Vinyl kept inside its colour range

Colour limited to the panel's heat absorption rating, so it cannot buckle out of its channels.

Loose panels refixed

Cladding secured and joints caulked before coating, rather than painted over as found.

Siding Painting specifics

Aluminum siding and the Toronto inner suburbs

Aluminum cladding went on a great deal of Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York housing through the 1960s and 1970s, either as original cladding or as a retrofit over wood. Fifty-odd years on, most of it is structurally fine and cosmetically finished: the factory coating has oxidised, the colour has gone flat and uneven, and the surface chalks.

That is an excellent candidate for painting. The panels are sound, replacement would be expensive, and a proper wash, prime and two-coat system brings the house back for a fraction of the cost. It is also the job where cutting the wash short makes the coating fail, because every subsequent coat is only as attached as the powder underneath it.

Stucco siding painting on 905 front elevations

Subdivision housing through Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan and Richmond Hill frequently carries stucco or an acrylic stucco finish across the front elevation with siding or brick elsewhere. Those surfaces are usually the first on the house to look tired, because the original builder application is thin and the front faces the street.

Stucco takes a masonry-rated or elastomeric coating that can move with it. Before coating we want the hairline cracking mapped and the larger cracks filled, because a coating flexible enough to bridge a hairline is not going to bridge a quarter-inch gap.

One house, two siding materials, two products

A great many Toronto and 905 houses carry brick to the first floor and siding above, or stucco on the front and siding on the sides. Those are two products, two preparations and often two colours, and the quote should read that way.

We price by elevation and by material rather than averaging the whole house into one rate, which matters when three sides are sound and the south face has taken a decade of direct sun.

Siding painting questions

What does siding painting cost in Toronto?

It sits inside the general exterior range of roughly $3.00 to $6.00 per square foot of paintable surface before HST, which puts a typical detached house between $4,000 and $9,000. Heavily chalked aluminum sits at the upper end because the wash and prime stage is substantial.

How do I know if my aluminum siding is chalking?

Run a hand or a dark cloth down a south-facing panel. If it comes away with a fine powder on it, the binder in the original coating has broken down and that layer must be washed off before anything else happens.

Can vinyl siding be painted?

Yes, with a vinyl-safe product and a colour no darker than the panel's original heat absorption rating. Vinyl expands considerably in direct sun, and a dark colour on a south elevation will cause panels to buckle out of their channels.

Does stucco need a special coating?

It needs one that stays flexible. Stucco and parging develop hairline cracks as they move with temperature, and a rigid coating splits over them. An elastomeric or masonry-rated product bridges that movement instead.

Is painting siding better than replacing it?

Where the panels are sound and only the finish has failed, painting costs a fraction of replacement and gives a good result for years. Where panels are cracked, dented widely or letting water behind them, paint is money spent on cladding that still needs replacing.
