Kitchen cabinet painting in Toronto, priced by the door
Paint Toronto repaints kitchen cabinets across the city at a fraction of replacement cost. Cabinets are priced per door and drawer front rather than per kitchen, because the door count is what drives the hours, not the size of the room.
Doors removed, numbered and sprayed off the frames
Degreasing before sanding, because sanding grease drives it in
Hard waterborne enamel that takes cleaning without softening

What separates a cabinet job that lasts
Degrease first
Kitchen doors carry cooking grease in the finish. Sanding a greasy door drives the contamination into the scratch pattern and the primer will not bond.
Sprayed off the frame
Doors come off, get numbered, and are sprayed flat on a rack. A brushed cabinet door shows every stroke under kitchen lighting.
A film that cures hard
Cabinet enamel needs days to reach full hardness. We stage reinstallation so doors are not closing onto soft paint.
Our Process
How a cabinet repaint runs
1
Count and quote
Doors, drawer fronts and exposed panels counted, the substrate identified, and a price per unit set.
2
Strip out and degrease
Doors and hardware removed and numbered, then every surface degreased before a single sanding sponge comes out.
3
Sand, fill, prime
Surfaces scuffed to a mechanical key, damage filled, and a bonding primer applied that suits the original finish.
4
Spray, cure, rehang
Two sprayed topcoats, cured on the rack, then doors rehung to their numbers with hardware refitted.

$2,600-$3,800
About 15-22 doors and drawer fronts
Frames and boxes painted in place
Typically three to five working days
Hardware refitted or replaced to your choice
Four steps that separate a cabinet finish that lasts from one that chips.
Priced per door and drawer front
Counted at the walkthrough, because the count is the workload rather than the size of the kitchen.
Every door assessed individually
Lifted thermofoil and damaged fronts identified before spraying, not discovered halfway through.
Degreased before sanding
Cooking residue removed first, because sanding a greasy door drives the contamination into the surface.
Cure time built into the schedule
Doors rehung once the film is hard enough to be closed onto, not the moment it is dry to touch.
Kitchen Cabinet Painting specifics
Why the door count and not the kitchen size
A large kitchen with a small number of tall doors takes less labour than a compact kitchen packed with drawer banks, and pricing by room size hides that. Every door is handled the same number of times regardless of its area: removed, labelled, degreased, sanded, filled, primed, sprayed twice, cured and rehung. The count is the workload.
Drawer fronts count as units for the same reason. A bank of five drawers is five pieces through the whole cycle, not one.
Which kitchen cabinet doors can be painted
Most Toronto kitchens fall into one of three groups. Solid wood and wood-veneer doors, common in stock built before the 2000s, sand to a clean key and take primer reliably. MDF and painted doors are straightforward as long as the existing film is sound. Thermofoil, which dominated builder kitchens through the 2000s, is the risk, because the foil is a heat-bonded skin that can lift near heat sources and cannot be repaired with paint.
We check every door individually at the walkthrough rather than assessing the kitchen as a whole, because a single failed door does not condemn the job. It just needs replacing before the rest is sprayed.
Colour and sheen inside a Toronto kitchen
Kitchen humidity swings hard through July and August, and cabinet fronts take direct contact all year. A satin or semi-gloss cabinet enamel cleans properly and does not burnish where hands land. Full gloss shows every ripple in an older door and is unforgiving of a substrate that is not dead flat.
Two-tone kitchens, darker lowers with lighter uppers, remain the most common request in the city and cost no more than a single colour provided both are sprayed in the same visit.
Cabinet painting questions
What does cabinet painting cost in Toronto?
Roughly $150 to $250 per door and drawer front before HST, which puts a standard kitchen between $3,500 and $5,500 and a large kitchen with an island between $5,000 and $7,800. Across the published Toronto guides the full spread runs $2,600 to $7,800. These are researched ranges rather than a quote.
Can thermofoil or laminate cabinets be painted?
Thermofoil can be, but only where the foil is still fully bonded. Once it has lifted at a corner or peeled near the oven, paint will not re-adhere it and the door needs replacing. We check every door at the walkthrough and tell you which ones are not candidates.
How long is the kitchen out of use?
Boxes stay usable throughout. Doors are away for the spraying and curing period, so expect open shelving for roughly three to seven working days depending on the door count. We stage the work so the sink and appliances stay accessible.
Will it chip?
A waterborne cabinet enamel applied over a properly degreased and primed surface is durable, but it is paint rather than a factory conversion varnish. It takes several days to reach full hardness, and treated normally after that it handles daily kitchen use. Any workmanship warranty is set out in your written quote.
Is painting cheaper than replacing?
Substantially, where the boxes are sound. Repainting a standard Toronto kitchen runs a few thousand dollars against a cabinet replacement measured in tens of thousands. Where boxes are water damaged or the layout is wrong, painting is money spent on a kitchen you will still want to replace.
