Drywall and plaster repair in Toronto, finished ready to paint

Paint Toronto repairs holes, nail pops, settlement cracks and water damage in both drywall and the plaster found throughout the older central stock. A repair is only finished when it has been painted back and you cannot find it.

Board, tape, three coats of compound, sanded flat
Texture matched on stipple and knockdown surfaces
Repairs spot primed so they do not flash through the topcoat

What makes a repair disappear

Feathered wide

A patch that is filled to its own edge always shows. Compound has to be feathered well past the repair so there is no ridge to catch light.

Texture matched

On a stipple or knockdown wall, a dead-flat patch is as obvious as a hole. The texture has to be rebuilt before paint.

Primed before paint

Fresh compound absorbs differently to aged paint. Without a spot prime the repair flashes as a dull patch through the finish coat.

Our Process

How a repair runs

1

Find the cause

A crack that keeps returning is movement, and a stain is a leak. We identify why before we fill, because filling a live problem buys a season.

2

Cut back and board

Damaged material cut back to sound edges, backing added where needed, and new board fitted flush.

3

Tape, coat, sand

Tape embedded, then coats of compound each feathered wider than the last, sanded flat between passes.

4

Texture, prime, paint

Texture matched where the wall has one, the repair spot primed, then painted back across the full surface or to a natural break.

Drywall repair cost in Toronto

Ranges before HST. Repair pricing depends on access and count, so these are starting bands rather than fixed prices.

Settlement cracks

$400-$800

Cracks running through a room or over a doorway
Raked out, taped and re-skimmed rather than just filled
Common in pre-1960 plaster
Painted back wall to wall so nothing flashes

Estimate a repair

Water damage

$650-$1,600

Damaged board cut out and replaced
Stain blocked before any finish coat
Requires the leak to be fixed first
Quoted after the affected area is exposed

What a repair scope covers

A repair is finished when you cannot find it, not when the hole is gone.

Cause identified before filling

A returning crack is movement and a stain is a leak. We work out which before anything is filled.

Feathered well past the patch

Compound taken wide of the repair so there is no ridge left to catch raking light.

Texture rebuilt where there is one

Stipple and knockdown matched over the repair, because a flat patch in a textured wall is as obvious as the damage.

Spot primed before paint

Fresh compound sealed so the repair does not flash dull through the finish coat.

Drywall Repair specifics

Drywall repair and painting belong in one scope

Splitting repair and painting between two trades is where most patch jobs go wrong. The drywall contractor finishes to a standard that looks flat under work light and leaves. The painter arrives, primes, and the repair shows.

Doing both under one scope means the person skimming the wall knows what sheen is going on it and how much raking light it will take. A wall destined for flat paint in a bedroom needs less finishing than a hallway getting eggshell under a wall sconce, and knowing that in advance is what decides how wide the compound gets feathered.

Nail pops, the most common winter drywall repair

A nail pop is the fastener backing out of the framing as the lumber behind it dries and shrinks, pushing the compound above it off. They appear in clusters, usually in the first few winters after a build or a renovation, and they appear again after a very dry January.

Filling the dimple alone does not fix it. The fastener needs to be driven or removed and a new screw set alongside it into sound framing, then the pair filled together. Done properly it does not return. Done as a fill, it returns next winter.

Texture matching a drywall repair in the inner suburbs

A great deal of North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke housing stock has textured walls or ceilings, and a flat patch in a textured surface catches the eye more than the original damage did. Matching means rebuilding the texture over the repair with the same method it was originally applied with, and then feathering the texture itself out into the surrounding area.

It is slower than a flat patch and it is the difference between a repair you can find and one you cannot.

Drywall repair questions

Do you repair plaster as well as drywall?

Yes, and in the older central Toronto stock plaster is the more common request. Plaster cracks along its keys rather than along a tape line, and where it has let go of the lath behind it the area needs re-anchoring before any compound goes on. We check by hand at the walkthrough.

Can you match my existing paint?

If you have the colour code or a leftover tin, yes. Without one we can colour match from a sample, but an aged wall has faded from its original tint, so the honest answer on a visible wall is to repaint the full surface to a corner or a natural break rather than to spot paint.

Why does my crack keep coming back?

Because it is movement rather than damage. Seasonal humidity swings in a Toronto house open and close joints between framing members, and a rigid fill across a moving joint will crack again. Those need raking out and taping, which lets the joint move under a flexible reinforcement rather than splitting the fill.

Do I need to fix the leak first?

Yes, and we will say so rather than take the job. Painting over an active leak hides the evidence while the board behind continues to degrade, and the repair has to be done twice.

How long before it can be painted?

Compound needs to be fully dry through its thickness before sanding and priming, which in practice means the repair and the paint are usually different days. On a single small patch in a dry room it can be same day.
