Stain or solid colour Moisture tested May to October

Deck and fence painting in Toronto, timed to a dry window

Paint Toronto washes, preps and coats decks, fences, railings and pergolas across the city. Horizontal wood is the hardest exterior surface in Toronto to keep coated, because it holds water, takes full sun and gets walked on.

Washed, then left to dry to a coatable moisture content, not just to the touch
Solid colour, semi-transparent stain or clear, chosen for the boards you have

Why deck coatings fail early

Coated too wet

Pressure-treated lumber holds water for days after a wash. Coating over trapped moisture blisters the film from underneath within weeks.

Horizontal exposure

A deck board takes sun, rain and foot traffic on the same face. It will need recoating years before the vertical railing does.

Film over penetrating

A solid colour sits on top and peels when it goes. A penetrating stain soaks in and wears away instead. On a walked surface that difference decides the recoat.

Our Process

How a deck or fence job runs

1

Assess the wood

Board condition, previous coating type, fastener state and whether the lumber is new enough to still be releasing mill treatment.

2

Wash and wait

Surface washed down to sound wood, then left to dry through. This is the step that decides whether the coating lasts.

3

Sand and prepare

Raised grain knocked back, splinters removed, protruding fasteners set, and failing previous coating taken off.

4

Coat in a dry window

Applied with a clear forecast either side, working with the grain and back-brushing so the coating is driven into the wood.

What a deck or fence scope covers

Horizontal wood is the hardest surface in Toronto to keep coated.

Moisture checked, not guessed

Boards tested after washing rather than coated because the surface feels dry to the hand.

New lumber given time

Fresh pressure-treated wood left to release its treatment before any coating is applied.

Stain or solid advised per surface

Penetrating stain on walking surfaces, solid colour on railings and fences, and the reason stated.

Dates set to the forecast

Applied with a genuine dry window either side, rather than to whatever the booking calendar said.

Deck and Fence Painting specifics

Washing and drying before any deck painting starts

Every failed deck coating in Toronto has the same story behind it: the deck was washed on a Saturday and coated on a Sunday. Pressure-treated softwood holds water well below the surface long after the boards feel dry to the hand, and a coating applied over that water traps it. The first hot day pushes it back out and the film blisters.

We check moisture rather than judging by feel, and we will move a coating date rather than work to a schedule the wood is not ready for. That is the single most useful thing a contractor can do on this job and it costs nothing but patience.

Deck stain against solid colour deck paint

Clear sealers protect against water and do almost nothing about ultraviolet light, which is what actually greys wood. On a south-facing Toronto deck a clear coat will look untreated within a season.

Semi-transparent stains carry enough pigment to block ultraviolet while still showing the grain, and they wear rather than peel. For most decks in the city this is the right answer.

Solid colour gives the most even appearance and the most protection, and on vertical surfaces it is excellent. On a deck floor it is a commitment, because when it eventually fails it has to come off before anything else goes on.

Fences on a Toronto property line

A fence on a shared property line is a conversation with a neighbour before it is a painting job, particularly where the far face is only reachable from their side. We coat what we can reach and we will tell you honestly what will happen to the boards if only one face gets done.

Pergolas, privacy screens and gate hardware are quoted alongside the fence run, since the setup and the dry window are already committed.

Deck and fence questions

Should I stain or paint my deck?

On a walking surface, stain in most cases. A solid colour paint forms a film on top of the board, and when that film fails it peels in sheets that have to be stripped before recoating. A penetrating stain soaks into the wood and wears thin instead, which means the next recoat is a wash and a coat rather than a strip. On railings and fences, where nobody walks, solid colour holds up well and gives cleaner coverage.

My deck is brand new. Can it be coated now?

Usually not immediately. New pressure-treated lumber arrives wet with treatment solution and needs to dry out before it will accept a coating, which in Toronto commonly means waiting a few months into the first dry season. Coating it too early is the most common reason a new deck looks bad in its second year.

When is the right time of year?

May to mid-October, with a genuine dry window either side of the application. Late August and September bring the most settled conditions of the year for deck work: lower humidity, cooler surfaces, and steadier weather than June.

Do you coat both sides of a fence?

Where there is access, yes, and it is worth doing. A fence coated on one face only takes on water from the uncoated side, and the boards cup toward the sealed face over a few seasons.

How often will a deck need recoating?

Far more often than a wall. A horizontal surface in full Toronto sun with foot traffic on it works harder than any vertical surface on the property. Plan on a maintenance recoat rather than treating it as a one-off, and expect railings to outlast the deck floor by a good margin.
