Ceiling painting in Toronto, without the roller tracking

Paint Toronto repaints ceilings across houses and condo suites: flat drywall, stipple, stucco and two-storey spaces. A ceiling is the hardest surface in a room to make look even, because it is lit from below at a raking angle that shows every lap mark.

Why ceilings show every shortcut

Raking light

Ceilings are lit from below at a shallow angle, which throws a shadow off every roller lap and every missed spot. Walls forgive this. Ceilings do not.

Stains bleed through

Water marks, smoke and tannin come back through latex within days. They need a stain-blocking primer, not another coat.

Height and texture

A stipple ceiling holds far more paint than a flat one and a two-storey space needs staging. Both change the number.

Our Process

How a ceiling repaint runs

1

Assess and quote

Ceiling type identified, stains located, height and access noted, and a per-room price set.

2

Mask everything below

Floors, contents, wall tops and light fixtures covered. Ceiling work throws fine spatter across an entire room.

3

Seal the stains

Water, smoke and tannin marks spot primed with a stain blocker so they do not reappear through the finish coats.

4

Cut and roll wet

Cut lines run and rolled into while still wet, working in sections so no lap dries before the next one meets it.

What a ceiling scope covers

Ceilings are lit at a raking angle, so technique shows more than product does.

Stains sealed, not covered

Water, smoke and tannin marks spot primed with a stain blocker before any finish coat goes on.

Worked wet edge to wet edge

Sections planned so no lap dries before the next meets it, which is what stops banding under side light.

Full-room masking

Ceiling work throws fine spatter across a room, so floors, contents and wall tops are covered first.

Ceiling type priced honestly

Textured ceilings quoted at their real rate rather than sold at a flat-ceiling price and revised later.

Ceiling Painting specifics

Why ceiling painting specifies flat, not eggshell

Ceilings take flat paint for a reason. Any sheen at all reflects the raking light coming off wall-mounted and pendant fixtures, and that reflection picks out every minor undulation in the board, every fastener dimple and every seam. Flat scatters the light instead and hides the surface.

The trade-off is washability, which is why a flat ceiling paint is a poor choice in a shower room. In a bathroom the right answer is a mould-resistant ceiling product with a slight sheen, accepting a little more visible texture in exchange for a surface that survives the humidity.

Condo ceilings and house ceilings are different problems

In a Toronto condo suite the ceiling is usually concrete slab with a skim or a sprayed texture directly on it, and the constraint is access: masking a furnished suite, and working inside the building's permitted hours. In a house the ceiling is drywall or, in the older central stock, plaster on lath.

Plaster ceilings are the ones to watch. A plaster ceiling that has started to let go of its lath will sag almost imperceptibly and show a hairline crack along the key line. Painting it makes it look repaired for a season. We press-test suspect areas at the walkthrough and quote re-anchoring separately if it is needed, because paint is not a structural product.

Choosing a ceiling colour for a standard or tall room

Bright white is the default and it is the right default in a room with standard ceiling height, because it maximises bounced light. In a tall room, and particularly in a vaulted Vaughan or Richmond Hill foyer, a ceiling tinted a few percent toward the wall colour reads warmer and pulls the height down visually.

Where walls and ceiling are the same colour, the ceiling still takes flat and the walls still take eggshell. Same colour, different sheen, and the room looks deliberate rather than unfinished.

Ceiling painting questions

What does ceiling painting cost in Toronto?

A smooth drywall ceiling runs about $300 to $500 per room before HST, and a stucco or popcorn ceiling about $500 to $900 because texture holds roughly twice the paint and takes longer to cut. As an add-on to a room repaint, a small bathroom or powder room ceiling is commonly quoted at $50 to $60.

Why does my ceiling look patchy after painting?

Almost always a lap mark problem. Ceiling paint sets quickly, and if a section dries before the next one is rolled into it the join shows as a band under raking light. The fix is working wet edge to wet edge in planned sections, which is a technique rather than a product.

There is a water stain. Will paint cover it?

Not on its own. Water, smoke and tannin stains bleed through waterborne ceiling paint within days regardless of how many coats go on. They need a stain-blocking primer over the mark first. We also want to know the leak is fixed, because painting over an active leak just hides it.

Can a textured ceiling be painted rather than removed?

Yes, and it is usually the sensible option. Painting the texture costs a fraction of removing it and keeps the surface sealed, which matters if the texture predates about 1990 and has not been tested for asbestos.

Do you paint ceilings without painting the walls?

Often. Ceilings-only work is common in condo suites and rentals. The masking burden is the same either way, so the per-room price reflects that rather than being a simple fraction of a full room repaint.
